Week 3

Message Notes

Look Back

Rescued People Rescue - This past week, did you notice others with specific needs for the first time? Were you able to provide help for any of them?

Look Up

Mission Over Me

Read Mark 12:28-34 28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them arguing with one another, and seeing that he (Jesus) answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.

  1. What does it mean to you to love God with all your heart, soul, mind & strength?
  2. How would you define neighbor? Do you think it’s possible to love your neighbor as yourself?
  3. What do you think Jesus meant by telling him he is "not far" from the Kingdom?

Read the similar passage in Matthew 22:35-40

  1. Why is it so significant to this audience that Jesus said ‘all the law and the prophets hang on these two commands’?

Read Exodus 20:3-17

  1. How does obedience to Jesus two’ ‘love commands’ single-handedly cover each of the ten commandments?

Read In Mark 12:34 above, why do you think no one asked Jesus another question? / Read Matthew 4:18-22 As a Christ-follower, true life is found in laying ours down and following Jesus. Living on mission doesn’t mean you have to leave your town to be a missionary in another country. Discuss what it might look like for you to join Jesus in His mission right in your neighborhood, in your community, in your area of influence.

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

Let’s continue to look for ways we can intentionally carry out Jesus’ command to love God and others. How will you live this out in the coming week where you Live, Work, Play or Learn?
