Week 2

Message Notes

Look Back

In what ways were you able to help the least of those around you? What specific actions will you commit to this summer? Call Me When is a great way we align the needs of families in our community with the resources we have as a church. If there’s a need you can meet, just let us know at the Call Me When link at the top of salty.org.

Look Up

Read Luke 10:25-37

  1. What do you think the lawyer wanted to accomplish by asking Jesus the questions he did? What was his motivation and how does this compare to the motivation of most people today?
  2. What does the lawyer’s answer in verse 27 tell you about him? Why is his “correct” response significant?
  3. Why do you think Jesus included a priest and temple assistant in his illustration? What was their response to the man in need and what does this teach us about people?
  4. How was the Samaritan’s response different from the others? What does verse 33 say was the reason he stopped and acted? Do you think this was due to his knowledge of the Law or something else?

Read Matthew 25:31-40

  1. How is this passage similar to the Good Samaritan passage? How is it different?
  2. What role does the Son of Man (Jesus) play in this passage? What does this mean for how you live your life daily?
  3. How much emphasis does Jesus place on knowledge of the Law in this illustration? Why do you think He took this approach?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

Who around you needs rescue and what steps will you take to help that person?

Notes

Jesus offers a very simple way to please God - by acting in love toward God and those around us. While this can be easy to understand and accept, it is very difficult to love others “as ourselves”. Jesus understands our challenge and encourages His followers to act in small ways to meet the needs of those we encounter daily. Understanding God’s word and love for us is important, but in the end, the most important thing is what we do to show others love by putting them and their needs first. Take time to look for the people around you who need rescue and slow down to care for their needs.
