Week 7

Message Notes

Look Back

What change did you make to give you meaning and align with what God cares about?

Look Up

Read Luke 15:1-10

Read Luke 15:1 in different translations. Who was Jesus’ audience, and why would these types of people listen to Jesus? Why would Jesus take the time to teach them?

  1. What specifically did the owners in these parables have to do to find what they lost? What does this say about them, and how does this apply to people today?
  2. What do these parables have in common? What does this say about God’s desire for a relationship with people?

Read Luke 15:11-24

  1. What motivated the younger son to leave the family? How easy is it for you to relate to his attitude and actions?
  2. How did the father respond to the son’s request in Luke 15:12? What does this say about how God responds to us?
  3. What reasons did the Father give for celebrating in Luke 15:24? What specifically did his son do to become “dead” and “lost”? Who do you know that has followed a similar path?
  4. How is this parable different from the prior two? What message was Jesus trying to send to the people who were listening to him?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

Who is your one? How will God use you to help them find their way home?

Notes

For some reason, men and women with “doubtful” and “notorious” reputations were drawn to Jesus and were listening intently to Jesus’ teaching. Jesus took time to talk to them with vivid illustrations of God's extravagant and lavish love for His children. His message was clear - God loves us enough to allow us the freedom to follow our desires but rejoices when we humbly return to His loving care. God is not looking for servants to do His work. He is looking for sons and daughters to pour out His extravagant love.
