Week 5

Message Notes

Look Back

How were you a “witness,” helping someone else find their way to Jesus this week?

Look Up

Read Mark 10:32-34

  1. What do these verses say about Jesus? What was Jesus determined to do and why?

Read Mark 10:35-40

  1. Why did James and John come to Jesus? What were they asking for and what does this say about how people often pursue power and position?
  2. What was Jesus referring to in verses 38-39? How does this relate to what Jesus told His disciples in verses 33-34?
  3. What does verse 40 say about how Jesus views power and position? What message was He sending to James and John, and how does it show a “kingdom” mindset?

Read Mark 10:41-45 and 2 Chronicles 7:14

  1. What do these verses say about earthly kingdoms and rulers? How are followers of Jesus called to be different and why?
  2. What do these verses say about how people should view and approach God? What do they say about how people should view and approach other people? Why is it important for followers of Jesus to do both?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

In what ways are you committed to service for the benefit of other people? How? In what ways are you reluctant to serve for the benefit of other people? Why?

Notes

Jesus’ approach to gaining power and position is radically different from the approach taken by most political leaders. Service and sacrifice is kingdom power - it changes you and it changes the world. When in doubt, we need to act like Jesus by serving others in our friendships, business, family and marriage. What matters most is what God is doing in us. He has the power and ability to do great things through us when we humbly come before Him and seek His ways.
