Week 6

Message Notes

Look Back

How did you experience a spiritual or emotional “reset” by exchanging some of your time to “be” with Jesus or “become” like Jesus?

Look Up

Read 1 Peter 4:8-10

  1. What is the connection between love and hospitality? Is it possible to have one without the other? Why or why not?
  2. What challenge does Peter make to those who have been given gifts and abilities? What impact should this have on a person who is trying to do things like Jesus?
  3. Why does Peter say we are to offer hospitality “without grumbling”? How do other translations of this verse help you better understand and apply this in your daily life?

Read Luke 19:1-10 and 5:27-32

  1. How are Zacchaeus and Levi similar? How are their situations and initial encounters with Jesus different? Which of these can you relate to?
  2. How did the “people” respond to Jesus’s actions in Luke 19:7? How does this compare to the response of the Pharisees in Luke 5:30? How should these reactions impact and influence people today who are trying to do things like Jesus?
  3. What do Luke 19:10 and 5:31 reveal about Jesus? How easy or difficult is it for you to live with this perspective? What specific things have helped you see people like Jesus did?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

Who’s the person you need to invite into your life this week? Where will you invite them?

Notes

For Jesus, hospitality opened the door to relationships. However, it was always more than just having a good meal. We will never know what was said at dinner to Zaccheus by Jesus, but what we do know is that it changed Zaccheus’s life. Something was said that led him to completely change the way he was living. Sharing a meal at the same table is intimate. It develops relationships so well. Jesus didn’t invite them to church. Meals can be the way for you to effect change. Who do you need to invite in?
