Message Notes
Look Back
What did you do differently that required you to trust and follow Jesus in a new way?
Look Up
Read Mark 1:16-18 and Luke 10:38-42
- What did Simon and Andrew exchange to “be with” Jesus? What things might they have thought or worried about?
- How is Mary’s decision to “be with” Jesus different from Simon and Andrew's? Which situation is easier for you to relate to right now?
- What was Martha focused on? What was Jesus’ message to Martha, and what would you do if you were Martha and Jesus said these things to you?
Read John 14:15-18, John 14:25-26 and John 15:4-5
- Jesus spoke these words after being with His disciples for 3 years. What was He preparing them for, and what did He offer them? How does this apply to people today?
- What specifically did Jesus say the Holy Spirit would do? What does Jesus say we need to do to receive and be changed by the Holy Spirit?
- What does it look like to “remain”, or “be with” Jesus in today’s world? What are some of the biggest challenges you are facing right now?
Overall (Discovery Bible Study)
- What do these scriptures say about God?
- What do they say about people?
- How will I apply this to my life?
Look Ahead
What is one daily activity that you will exchange for “what is better” this week?
Notes
Like Mary and Martha, Jesus offers everyone a “better choice” if we are willing to exchange the time we spend focused on things that distract us for time simply focused on being with Jesus. When we develop habits that consistently shift our focus to Jesus, we start to find new understanding and peace with the help, support, and direction of God’s Holy Spirit. We live in time-torn lives: We want to be with Jesus, but we just don’t have time… We genuinely desire to grow into people of love, but our to-do lists are too long to make any serious attempt… The vast majority of us have far too much going on to “add” Jesus into our overly busy schedules... The call to apprentice under Jesus is a call not to do more but to do less… John Mark Comer - Practicing the Way
