Message Notes
Look Back
What did you do to access the power of God through prayer and worship before rushing into battle?
Look Up
Read Mark 1:16-22
- What was Jesus doing at the beginning of this passage (verse 16)? How does this compare with what he was doing later in the passage (verse 21), and why is this significant?
- What motivated the disciples to leave their life work and follow Jesus? Have you ever been motivated to do something like this, and if so, what was your motivation?
- Read verse 22 in several different translations and compare the different descriptions of why the people were amazed at Jesus’ teaching. How does this help you better understand who Jesus is and how He taught?
Read Proverbs 3:5-7 and John 10:10
- What is the first thing we are instructed to do in Proverbs 3:5? Why is this a critical starting point for a disciple or apprentice of Jesus?
- What does the author tell us “not” to do in these verses? Why is this important for a person who wants to be an apprentice in any area of work?
- Why does the author tell us to “turn away from evil”? What steps or actions have you taken in your life to do this? Who “taught” you or set the example for you to follow?
Overall (Discovery Bible Study)
- What do these scriptures say about God?
- What do they say about people?
- How will I apply this to my life?
Look Ahead
How have you been trusting in your own understanding and following your heart? Will you decide today to trust and follow Jesus in all your ways?
Notes
Following Jesus is based on the first-century practice of rabbis and apprentices. Today, to follow Jesus means to apprentice under him. To apprentice is to watch and learn by doing - it involves teaching, but the goal is not to learn more but to develop the ability to lead other apprentices as you have been led. Apprenticing under Jesus means practicing a way of life based on three driving goals: o To be with Jesus o To become like Jesus o To do as Jesus did
