Message Notes
Look Back
How did you boldly pray for God to give you strength to keep “rowing” or to show you what it means to “get out of the boat” in a difficult situation?
Look Up
Read Mark 10:35-40 and Matthew 20:23
- Who and what was James and John’s question focused on? What does this say about them and how common is this in people in general?
- Based on their response in verse 39, how confident were James and John that they understood Jesus? What did Jesus do or say to expand their perspective and understanding of God’s eternal plans? Have you ever been in a situation where your perspective was expanded from temporary/physical eternal/spiritual?
Read Mark 10:41-45
- How did the other disciples react and why? What does this say about their perspective, and people in general?
- What did Jesus talk about first in verse 42? Why did He start with something that was familiar and worldly before telling them what He expected of them?
Read John 14:8-13
- What did Philip ask Jesus to do and why? What was Philip focused on?
- How is Jesus’ answer to Philip similar to His answer in Mark 10? How is it different?
- Based on verses 11-13, what are some ways followers of Jesus participate in the realization of answered prayers? What are other ways we can participate with God in the realization of our bold prayers?
Overall (Discovery Bible Study)
- What do these scriptures say about God?
- What do they say about people?
- How will I apply this to my life?
Look Ahead
What is your bold and persistent prayer? How are you participating in receiving an answer?
Notes
Jesus was not bothered by the disciples' questions but their perspective. Despite following Jesus for years, they were looking for temporary physical answers rather than looking for the eternal spiritual solution. God clearly wants us to ask but also wants us to participate in the answer to our whatever prayers. It starts by believing in Jesus as God’s Son, submitting to His authority, and doing what He had done on earth. Pray for His guidance in following Him daily.
