Message Notes
Look Back
How did you commit to looking to God for rescue and sharing your story with others this week?
Look Up
Read Mark 1:16-20
- What is most striking to you about the way Jesus began his ministry? Why do you think he called fishermen to follow Him, and how is this relevant and important today?
- What does Jesus say the fishermen were required to start or stop doing to become “fishers of men”? Did they fully understand what was ahead of them, and if not, why did they leave their nets and follow Jesus?
- Has anyone ever asked you to follow them and make a major change in your lifestyle? What was your response, and what were the results?
Read Luke 5:1-11 (Three biblical authors give accounts of Jesus’ calling His future disciples to follow Him, but only Luke provides details of Simon’s interaction to Jesus)
- Based on this account, what was the first thing Jesus asked Simon to do in verses 4-5? How did Simon respond, and why? What does this say about his confidence in Jesus?
- How did Simon react to the large catch in verse 8? Why did Simon respond this way, and what does this say about how he viewed his life and relationship with God?
- What two things did Jesus say to Simon in verse 10? What message was He trying to send, and how did Simon respond? How does this message apply to you right now?
Overall (Discovery Bible Study)
- What do these scriptures say about God?
- What do they say about people?
- How will I apply this to my life?
Look Ahead
Who or what will you stop or start following? How will you follow Jesus more closely this week?
Notes
These fishermen saw something in Jesus that was worth giving up everything familiar. Their lives were put on hold, or even completely changed, for the next three years. They had no timeline, no guarantees—only the undeniable pull of Jesus, and that was enough for them to follow. Our identity isn’t shaped by what we do but by the One who calls us to follow. Jesus will call you to do something in the context of your daily life. The path and process may not be fully clear, but Jesus promises that He will make us into something more than we are today. Jesus didn’t say follow me and stop… He didn’t say follow me and start… He just said follow me, AND I WILL… May we, like the first disciples, leave behind our old lives and follow Jesus with all our hearts, knowing that He is making us into fishers of men for His glory.
