Week 5

Message Notes

Look Back

What did you discover you disagree most with in our culture today? How did last week's discussion influence or impact how you feel about it today?

Connect

Have you ever personally felt like someone else needed to “save” (physically, financially, or spiritually) you from a situation or relationship? What happened?

Look Up

Read Isaiah 64:1-9

  1. Isaiah wrote this at a time when the nation of Israel was returning from exile and captivity - what do you think Isaiah is really asking for in verses 1-2? What is Isaiah’s motivation for asking this of God?
  2. What do verses 3-4 show us about people? How are we similar?
  3. How then would you put verse 5 in your own words? What does it mean to apply this practically?
  4. What do the verses that follow (6-7) say about our tendencies? When have you presented God with “filthy rags?”
  5. What do verses 8-9 say about God? About people? How can this be encouraging for our lives?

Read Romans 3:20-26

  1. The book of Romans was written 700 years after the Prophet Isaiah lived - What are the various things that these 2 passages have in common?
  2. What do you think is the difference between God’s “ways” and God’s “law”? Which one do you tend to focus on? Why?
  3. What does it mean to be justified? (v20 and v26) What does that mean for our lives today to live out of?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

What does this section of Romans reveal to us about God? People? How can we apply these learnings in regards to our “ONE”?

Notes

Some great questions this week as we take a deep dive into salvation. The Gospel story began in Gen 3 with the fall and continues today. Isaiah is a powerful book and sometimes called the 5th “gospel” because so much of it points to Jesus centuries before Jesus showed up. In Isaiah 64 we see a stark picture of just really what lies within human nature and how God views our good works. This picture of course is to set the stage to show our need for a saviour. This is reiterated with the Romans passage in what Jesus ultimately achieved on the cross and why we need Him. Both of these sections of scripture should well up a heart for our ONE’s and the lost in this world. We have to be intentional , we have to seek out the lost, we have to go after the ONE…. If we don't , who will? Leadership tip Our hope is that this series has really fostered some productive conversations among your group. Groups have to be a place for us to sharpen one another and be a safe place to hash out some of these topics according to what God's Word says. Engage your groups to be a place of encouragement for one another. As our culture continues to grow increasingly challenging towards Jesus, its crucial as we gather we are building one another up in love.
