Week 4

Message Notes

Look Back

What did you do this week to overcome loneliness that you, or someone else was feeling? What was the result?

Connect

How do you typically react when someone strongly disagrees with you? Do you shut down, become defensive or change the subject? Have you ever evaluated why you usually react this way?

Look Up

Read Matthew 22:36-40 and Luke 6:32-36

  1. What does it mean to “love” your neighbor? Why did Jesus command His followers to do it? And what kind of people did this include in Jesus’ time?
  2. To what extent do you agree with your current neighbors? How does this impact how well you “love” them?
  3. How would you define what verse 40 means?
  4. How does the Luke passage help clarify what it means to love our neighbors? To what extent is it necessary is it to “agree” with someone in order to love them?

Read Luke 6:37-42

  1. Why do you think Jesus mentions things that are “not” to be done?
  2. Why do some people gravitate to being judgemental or condemning? What in our culture leads people to this behavior?
  3. How would you describe the difference between disagreeing and judging or condemning? How easy is it for you to separate these things? Why?
  4. How does the illustration in verses 39-40 relate to verses 35-36 in the prior section? Why do you think this is important?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

What “speck” do you wrestle with? What in our world in our culture do you find that you disagree with most? What emotions or feelings present themselves? Utilize today's scripture to dig into those areas and invite Jesus into to help you navigate those feelings in order to better reflect truth through love.

Notes

The topic of being transgender is quite a hot one in our day and age. It will continue to grow and be more present as the years pass. So for us as followers of Jesus, how are we to respond? How are we to treat those who may see things differently than us. Jesus gives us a great starting place to begin. Love… Love is required but does not demand agreement. Leadership tip Who’s your NEXT? It’s always our hope that your groups are a place of growth and community. It's something we want for everyone to experience. However every group needs a leader. We know that the best leaders who will take our church to the next level of discipleship are currently sitting under your leadership… Who in your group shows leadership qualities? Have you allowed them to lead a week? Let your Campus Pastor know so that together you can discuss a plan to help further discipleship.
