Look Back
What did you discover about your level of confidence in your personal relationship with Jesus this week? Who did you share what you learned with?
Connect
Today our world is filled with “influencers” on culture. Who or what influenced your past or present views of sexuality?
Look Up
Read 1 Thesselonians 4:1-2
- According to v1 and 2, How is Paul using this big idea of influence for the Thesselonians? Who “influenced” Paul’s thinking?
- Why do you think that Paul uses the term “Lord Jesus” in these verses? What does it mean to truly give Jesus “Lordship” over your life?
- What reason does Paul give for following these directions? In saying “ more and more” do we ever “arrive” in our walks with Jesus? What is an area you need to work on?
Read 1 Thesselonians 4:3-8
- How would you share v 3 with someone else who does not know God?
- How can someone “learn to control” their body? Have you ever done this by learning to type, a dance move or a golf swing? How is this different from controlling our body sexually?
- Why do you think Paul included v 6? What does that mean for us today?
Overall (Discovery Bible Study)
- What do these scriptures say about God?
- What do they say about people?
- How will I apply this to my life?
Look Ahead
As our world becomes more and more desensitized to sexual immorality, it opens up a place for us to dig deeper into what God has to say. As big as sexual immorality is, the issue is much deeper, that expands much further. What is the key message you take away from verse 7-8? How will you apply it personally or share this with others?
Notes
Sexual immorality is a massive topic that we need to be discussing. The world is spiraling faster and faster into a culture of “ Do whatever you want” . As we have seen in the Old Testament, this never turns out good. As Christians, it's our role to reflect the very nature of God in every aspect of our lives , including sexuality. God created us God created sex and therefore God gets to define how we are to properly use it. Our groups have to be a safe environment to engage in these discussions. This could be a challenging topic for some and for others it may bring up feelings of shame. Regardless, our groups need to be a place of hope and restoration. No matter what you've done or what has been done to you. Keep in mind we are all broken, we have all strayed, and we all need God's grace. Leadership tip This has the opportunity to possibly reveal an area of struggle for some in your group. Please be sensitive and aware of that. This may be a powerful opportunity to help someone who may be struggling get the healing they need or it may be a place where you need help as a leader.
