Week 2

Message Notes

Look Back

How did you fill in the blank: In Christ I Am _____________. What did God show you about yourself and how did you apply it?

Connect

Do your current circumstances lead you to feel like you are “living” or “dying”? Why?

Look Up

Read Ephesians 2:1-5

  1. What does Paul say was the reason that at one time we were “dead”? Is that a term you would have personally used to describe your life? Why or why not?
  2. What does v3 reflect about the nature of God? About people?
  3. How do verses 4&5 add to the nature of God? Why do you think Paul uses the phrase “But God....” to transition between these verses?

Read Ephesians 2:8-22

  1. Verse 8 says that we receive grace when we “believed”? What do we need to believe and why? Is “believing” different or the same as “giving” or “surrendering” our lives?
  2. According to v13-14, what then is the solution to chaos in our lives?
  3. Since Unity is the underlying theme of 13-22, how does that parallel being alive in Christ? How are we to apply that to today in our own relationships?
  4. If you were to sum up the whole of Chapter 2 in a few sentences, what would it be?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

Our response to God’s grace should move beyond belief to full surrender each and every day. Can you say that for your life? Is there an area you have yet to fully surrender? Pray and reflect on where that is , and what is the first step of surrendering it

Notes

We can be fully alive and yet fully dead at the same time. V4-8 is some of the most powerful truths ever written. Not only because God is immeasurably gracious and merciful, it's in Him we find life. God has not only freed us from death, but has an amazing purpose for each and every one of us. As we live this fully surrendered life, peace and unity is reflected. We can all take confidence in Who God is and how He feels about us no matter what. Faith is where it begins but fully surrendered living is where the rubber meets the road. Leadership tip As we go through Ephesians, it's a great way to engage your group in going deeper into God's Word. One of the ways that is incredibly powerful, is to memorize scripture. Challenge your group each week to memorize something from Ephesians. Storing up God's Word in your heart is a powerful tool.
