Week 1

Message Notes

Look Back

What steps are you taking to do to be with, be like, and do as Jesus did?

Look Up

Read Proverbs 1:1-6

  1. What specifically does the author say is the intended purpose or goal of these biblical proverbs in verses 2-4? Which of these goals is most meaningful or important to you?
  2. From verses 5 & 6, how should people respond to the proverbs? How can people today apply this in their daily lives?

Read Proverbs 1:7-19

  1. What warnings are given in verses 7-19? What does this say about people, and how is it relevant today?
  2. Why does the author use imagery of a parent and a child? What does this say about God and what he wants and expects of you?

Read Proverbs 1:20-33

  1. The author portrays wisdom as a person in these verses – what things does wisdom “do” in verses 20-24? How does this help you better understand God’s relationship with people?
  2. How does the author describe the results of rejecting God’s wisdom in verses 29-32? What other outcome is described in verse 33? What is the difference?
  3. How does reading the entire 1st chapter help you better understand Proverbs 1:7?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

When are you prone to ignore God’s advice? How will you approach your next decision differently with this in mind?

Notes

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:7 The waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them, but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease without fear of harm." Proverbs 1:32-33
