Week 6

Message Notes

Look Back

How did you find peace when you prayed, “Lord, shine light on my next step,” as you turned on lights this week?

Look Up

Read Matthew 28:1-10

  1. What different emotions and feelings are described in this passage?
  2. Based on the events that led up to their visit to the tomb, how much “peace” had the women been experiencing? What did both the angel and Jesus say to address their feelings? What factors may have helped them feel more peace in hearing these words?

Read Matthew 28:16-20

  1. How did the disciples initially react to Jesus? How was this different from, or similar to, the reaction of the women? What can followers of Jesus today learn and apply from the initial reaction of the disciples?
  2. How does Jesus describe His “presence” in verse 20? Where is He present? When is He present? What gives you confidence that both are true and possible?

Read John 14:24-27, John 6:35, John 15:1, John 14:6-7 and John 8:12

  1. Based on John 14:26, what does the Holy Spirit do to create “peace of mind and heart”? What do people need to do to receive the gift of peace that Jesus offers?
  2. Which of the “I am” statements gives you the most peace in your life? Which statement do you need help understanding or accepting in order to experience greater peace?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

What steps will you take to make sure you develop habits of stopping to remember who Jesus is and His promise of peace in your life daily?

Notes

In the midst of darkness and despair, Isaiah declared hope in his prophecy of Jesus - “And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”. In addition to being “wonderful”, “mighty,” and “everlasting”, Jesus came to bring us a gift of peace that the world cannot offer. The key is that we stop and receive His gift, rather than chasing after things of this world. Peace is found in His presence, and we don’t have to chase peace when the Prince of peace is chasing us.
