Week 5

Message Notes

Look Back

What was the result of your trusting in the Lord with all your heart and not leaning on your own understanding?

Look Up

Read Matthew 15:21-25

  1. Why do you think the Canaanite (or Gentile) woman sought Jesus’ help? What factors led to her reaching out to Him and what significance do the titles she uses in verse 22 tell us about her?
  2. How do you think the disciples interpreted Jesus’ silent response to the woman? What do you think Jesus was trying to accomplish by remaining silent?
  3. What do you think Jesus was trying to accomplish by breaking His silence the way he did? How would you expect the woman and Jewish disciples to react?
  4. What was the woman’s actual response in 25? What does her choice of words and actions tell us about her?

Read Matthew 15:26-28 and Luke 11:5-10

  1. How do you interpret Jesus’ 2nd response in verse 26? What do you think the woman and the disciples were thinking when they heard this?
  2. What else does the woman’s response in verse 27 show us about her? How might you apply this in your life today?
  3. Why did Jesus say the woman had “great faith”? How does this compare to what most people think of when they hear the term “great faith” today?
  4. How does the experience of the Canaanite woman help you better understand and apply Jesus’ teaching in Luke 11? How can you apply this today?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

This week focus on submitting to and worshipping Jesus, as you persistently present your needs to God.

Notes

There are several different interpretations of the verses from Matthew, so this is a good week to share different translations and perspectives. Focus on finding areas of agreement and ways to apply learnings in light of the verses from Luke. Is it possible for us to be guided by silence…
