Week 3

Message Notes

Look Back

What steps did you take to trust and submit to a “truth” of God that you had been disregarding?

Look Up

Read Luke 19:1-10

  1. What was the first thing Jesus said to Zacchaeus in verse 5? What message was Jesus trying to send and to what extent does this statement alone show “love” for Zacchaeus?
  2. How did Zacchaeus respond to Jesus’ command in verse 6? What is significant about his response and how might you apply this in your life today?
  3. Why is Zacchaeus’ statement in verse 8 so significant? What impact did the “love” of Jesus have, and how did Zacchaeus demonstrate the “love” of Jesus?

Read John 8:3-12

  1. How was Jesus’ interaction with the religious leaders different from his interaction with Zacchaeus? What factors led to the difference?
  2. How did Jesus show love to the woman in verse 1 How is this different or similar to how he has shown His love for you?
  3. How do verses 11&12 show Jesus’ desire to seek and save the lost? What do these verses say people need to do once we have been saved?

Read Matthew 23:23-24

  1. Why did Jesus speak so harshly to the religious leaders? How easy is it for you to accept that it is possible to express “love” through “harsh” words? Why is this easy or difficult for you?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

Who do you know that needs to experience the love of Jesus? How will you help make that happen this week?

Notes

Jesus’ love was always intended to lead to repentance - He came to transform and improve lives, not to indulge or leave us as we were. His invitation is to come as you are, but don’t stay there. Following Jesus is about surrender, not comfort. We are to align ourselves to His standard, not the other way around. At times, Jesus was harsh, but only with those who saw themselves superior and resisted His teaching - he still loved them and wanted what was best for them. Following Jesus feels harshest when we resist and reject His truth.
