Message Notes
Look Back
What kinds of things did you put on your spiritual plate this week to grow as an apprentice of Jesus?
Look Up
Read John 18:33-40
- What question does Pilate ask Jesus in verse 33? How does Jesus respond, and what parts of Jesus’ response are hard for you to understand or accept?
Read verse 37 in several different translations – what words are common and what words are different? What new insights or understanding do you gain?
- What specific things does verse 37 say that those who are “of the truth” do? How can you apply this in your daily life?
Read Mark 15:9-15
- Mark’s gospel provides additional perspective on the exchange between Pilate and the Jewish people. What does Mark say was the motivation of the chief priests? What does this say about people and how does this apply to people today?
- What does Mark say was Pilate’s motivation for granting the request of the Jewish people? What role did “truth” play in his actions? What can people today do to help make sure that our choices are based on truth, and not self interest or the desires of other people?
Read Proverbs 14:12 and John 14:5-7
- What warnings and encouragement are given in these verses? What can you do to apply them in your personal life?
- How does John 14 describe the personal relationship between God, Jesus, the truth and the people who follow Jesus? How confident are you that you have the ability to personally know and see your heavenly Father in Jesus? How might listening to and accepting His truth build your confidence?
Overall (Discovery Bible Study)
- What do these scriptures say about God?
- What do they say about people?
- How will I apply this to my life?
Look Ahead
What is one of my “truths” that contradicts Jesus? Am I willing to trust and submit to His wisdom?
Notes
What if our personal understanding of truth is a trap? My truth can be whatever I want it to be, but Jesus presents a totally different perspective. Believing that Jesus was the truth may require us to examine and change our core beliefs. We need to understand the person of Jesus, who knows me, loves me and wants to guide me.
