Week 2

Message Notes

Look Back

What steps did you take to better understand and share the hope that Jesus offers in the midst of your struggles during this season?

Look Up

Read Luke 2:8-20

  1. What kinds of things typically “bring”, or “cause” great joy for people? What aspects do these things have in common?
  2. What did the angel say would bring great joy in verse 11? Why would this cause joy for people at the time of Jesus’ birth? How does this bring joy to people today?
  3. Summarize what the shepherds did in verses 15-20. What do their actions say about them and how easy is it for you to relate to them and their actions?

Read Luke 15:3-7

  1. How is the shepherd in this parable like the shepherds in Luke 2? How should the attitude and actions of the shepherds in these two passages shape lives of Jesus followers today?
  2. What 2 specific things mentioned in verse 7 cause joy in heaven? Why did Jesus focus on these specific actions?

Read Romans 3:22-26

  1. What do these verses say a person needs to do to “repent and return to God”? What specifically is required to be “made right with God”?
  2. How do these verses help you better understand the angel’s message in Luke 2:9-11?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

Are you ready to receive the greatest gift by trusting in Jesus today? Who do you know that needs to hear this message of good news that brings us lasting joy?

Notes

Most people spend a lot of time searching for things that bring happiness and joy. This search often falls short or leads to things that create temporary pleasure, but fall short of giving us sustainable joy. The angel’s message was simple - come and see! When the shepherds did, they were astonished and could not wait to tell others. Are you willing to come and see who Jesus is and what He offers? If so, are you willing to tell others and bring them with you?
