Week 1

Message Notes

Look Back

How did you begin or continue to practice and develop habits of mindfulness and setting healthy boundaries this week?

Connect

What does it mean to truly be a servant? Who do you know in your life that exudes the heart of a servant?

Look Up

Read Matthew 20:20-28

  1. What was the mother trying to accomplish in this passage? How would you describe her approach and attitude? What does this say about people?
  2. Why did Jesus respond in the way He did? How would you describe His attitude and approach? What does this say about Jesus?
  3. Did Jesus shut her down? Is aspiring to greatness bad? How does Jesus redefine it?
  4. In what ways is following Jesus counter cultural to how our world defines greatness? If we all lived out of Jesus' definition of greatness, how would the world look differently? How would your life be different?

Read Matthew 6:19-25

  1. Is the idea of storing up treasures in heaven, easy or difficult for you to grab a hold of? Why?
  2. Why do you think Jesus specifically mentions “serving” money rather than God? How big of a challenge has this been in your life? How much of a challenge is it for you today?
  3. What is required in order to be “devoted” to serving God? What unique abilities can you offer?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

Who or where are you serving? When was the last time you set aside your own desires or time to give to someone else? If you are serving, invite your ONE to join you. If you are not serving, join a Serve Team at Salty and see how impactful it is.

Notes

In Matthew 20 Jesus completely redefines what greatness looks like. Even more so modeled the night before the cross as He got on His knees to wash feet only to then tell us to do the same. We are all called to be servants, not because we GOT to but because we GET to. The world is not short of providing opportunities to serve others, as we set aside our lives people see Jesus through us. Leadership tip As a disciple maker, you get the awesome opportunity to spur one another on. This is a great opportunity to do just that for anyone who may not be serving regularly. We all need encouragement and others to believe in us.
