Look Back
Did you seek silence this week? If so, what better ways did you find to spend your time? How did it affect your week? Did you see the Holy Spirit at work in your life this week?
Look Up
Read Psalms 119:9-11, 15-16 How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. We become experts in what we love. Do you study what you love? Share a few examples.
- How is “studying” something different from simply “reading”? How do you apply this when you open God’s word?
- What are some reasons people don’t read their Bibles and don’t ‘live according to the word’?
- What are some ways you can hide God’s word in your heart? What do these verses say is the reason for doing this and why is it important?
Read Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
- In what ways do we conform to the pattern of this world?
- What gets in the way of reading your Bible?
Read Psalm 119:105 It has been said that what we repeat in times of ease, we will recall in times of hardship. Try memorizing this verse this week - Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Overall (Discovery Bible Study)
- What do these scriptures say about God?
- What do they say about people?
- How will I apply this to my life?
Look Ahead
What will you do to develop a plan of reading scripture daily, i.e. time and setting? Who can you talk with about what you’re learning?
Notes
Over the last few weeks we’ve focused on internal spiritual activities. Spiritual activities are critical to life, renewing your mind and growing your faith. We don’t always make time for activities that give us life. This week we are focused on external spiritual activity, specifically Bible study. Many struggle with Bible study because they just don’t know how. If you’re leading at Salty in any way, it’s important that you are ‘going before’ those you are leading. Embracing the discipline of daily Bible study is imperative.
