Week 3

Message Notes

Look Back

What steps did you take to recognize some of your “mistakes” as “sins” against God and others?

Look Up

Read Genesis 12:1-4 and Genesis 15:1-6

  1. What did God promise Abram (Abraham) in Genesis 12? What did God ask Abram to do and why?
  2. What was Abram focused on in Genesis 15 – what was he worried about? Do you tend to focus on what you do have or you do not have?
  3. Have you ever faced a situation where you could not see how things could ever turn out the way you wanted them to? Where do you typically turn at these times?
  4. How would you summarize God’s message to Abram?

Read Romans 4:18-25

  1. Why do you think the author starts verse 18 with the phrase “against all hope?” What point do you think he was trying to make, and why is it important?
  2. What were the results of Abraham’s unwavering belief in God’s promise?
  3. At what point do you think Abram became “fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised?” What would it take for you to believe in God this way?
  4. The author connects Abram’s faith to Jesus at the end of this passage - try to explain his purpose in doing this in your own words. How easy or difficult is this for you to do? Why?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

What if the next step of your life was trusting God? What obstacle is keeping you from trusting God with every situation and circumstance?

Notes

When sin stranded mankind in a broken world, God had a choice to hang an “Out of Order” sign on our mess and move on or to get involved. Because he cared, he chose to get involved. He reached out to one man, Abraham, and asked for his trust. God then cleared a path for a personal relationship and righteousness based on this trust. God makes the same offer to everyone today who believes that Jesus died for their sins and trusts Him to restore what sin has broken.
