Message Notes
Look Back
What have you learned about what is currently motivating (or limiting) your acts of worship? How has this changed the way you plan to give, pray or fast?
Look Up
Read Matthew 6:19-21 and 1 Timothy 6:17-19
- Why do you think Jesus used the examples of things rusting and being stolen in this passage? How easy is it for you to think of things this way? How might your desires change if you were better at imagining brand new things this way?
- What do you think Jesus means by “treasures in heaven”? How does 1 Timothy 6:17-19 help you better understand Jesus’ message?
- How easy is it for you to believe that your treasures are a reflection of your heart? What have you learned about yourself by examining what you treasure?
Read Matthew 6:24-25
- Why do you think Jesus limited His example to God and money, rather than including other things that people love?
- How true is verse 24 in today’s world? Do you think it is possible to serve two masters and love both God and money today? If so, how?
- What does it mean to serve, or be enslaved to money? Have you ever succeeded in breaking free from this type of situation?
- Why do you think that Jesus links love of God vs. money with worry in verse 25? What does this say about people and God?
Overall (Discovery Bible Study)
- What do these scriptures say about God?
- What do they say about people?
- How will I apply this to my life?
Look Ahead
Use the Driven diagnostic tool to determine what you are treasuring, devoted to or enslaved to? Seek help from God and others to change how you pursue the desires of your heart and find freedom to build up treasures in heaven. Group Note Encourage members to use the diagnostic tool in private, and to seek direction from God and the financial management resources listed on the diagnostic tool. Focus your group time on sharing past examples of successful budgeting and/or overcoming financial burdens, rather than trying to address current challenges.
