Week 2

Message Notes

Look Back

How has the story of Joseph helped you with your #1 stress right now?

Look Up

Read Genesis 39:1-6

  1. How did Joseph end up being bought as a slave by Potiphar? How does this compare to the dreams Joseph had as a boy and what do you think Joseph was feeling at this point in his life?
  2. How does Joseph’s situation change in these verses? What are some of the reasons given for the change in circumstances?
  3. How did Joseph “prosper”? Based on verses 4-6 do you think Joseph’s life became easier or more challenging? How might this apply to you right now?
  4. Where was God in this situation?

Read Genesis 39:6-23

  1. How did Potipah’s wife’s assessment of Joseph differ from that of her husband’s in verses 3-5? What does this say about people and God?
  2. What does Joseph’s response to Potiphar’s wife’s advances in verses 8 & 9 teach us about Joseph? What do you think was the real reason he rejected her advances and what do you think Joseph thought would happen next?
  3. How do you think that the Lord showed Joseph kindness and granted him favor in prison? What did Joseph do to gain God’s attention and favor?
  4. Where was God in this situation?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

What situation or struggle do you need to trust God in and believe that he is present? Group Note The story of Joseph challenges us to learn to trust in the power and the presence of God at all times and in all circumstances. Joseph’s life was filled with ups and downs, challenges and betrayal. How could a God who promised so much in his dreams lead him down a path like this? Joseph did not create the problem or decide that he wanted to go to prison - still God was present and caused Joseph to prosper
