Week 2

Message Notes

Look Back

What did you discover about how you truly feel about Jesus’ invitation to perfection? How have you responded to His invitation?

Look Up

Read Matthew 19:16-22 and Exodus 20:3-17

  1. What do you think the man’s goal was in approaching Jesus? What was his 1st question focused on and what does this reveal about him and people?

Read verse 17 in different translations - what key points does Jesus make? What was His reason for saying that no one was good except God and how does this apply to the man’s question?

  1. Why do you think the man followed up by asking Jesus a 2nd and 3rd question about which commandments he needed to keep? Why do you think people are tempted to believe they can become “good” through their actions?
  2. Why do you think Jesus let the man walk away? What does this tell you about Jesus’ call to “follow me”?

Read Matthew 19:16-30 and Exodus 20:3-17

  1. Why do you think Jesus told the disciples about how difficult it was to enter the kingdom of heaven after the man left? What was the disciples reaction?
  2. How do you think the disciples reacted to Jesus’ statement in verse 26? What does this verse mean to you personally?

Read Compare Exodus 20:3-7 with Matthew 19:16-30. What differences do you notice and how do these differences apply to Jesus’ commands to sell everything and follow me, and the promises He makes at the end of the Matthew passage?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

Reflect on what you have left for the sake of Jesus - what are you still unwilling to leave? Group

Notes

This week we see how Jesus responds to the common question of “how good is good enough”. While God gives us commands to help guide our daily interactions with others, He ultimately wants our undivided attention and commitment. Fortunately, He also provides us with strength and support when we fall short and offers us more than we can imagine.
