- What words are repeated several times in these verses? What do these words mean to you? Why do you think Jesus chose these specific words?
- How do verses 4-5 say that these keywords are interdependent and related? Why do you think Jesus ends verse 5 the way He does? What does this mean for you personally?
- What key phrases does Jesus add in verse 7? How does this add to or change what was said in the prior verses?
- Based on these verses, how should Christians “measure” how well they are “remaining” in Christ? How are you doing against this criteria?
Read John 15:9-17
- What different words are repeated several times in these verses? What do these words mean to you? Why do you think Jesus chose these specific words?
- What does verse 10 say we must do to remain in Jesus’ love? What does verse 11 say is the result and outcome of obeying Jesus’ commands?
- Why do you think Jesus made loving others a “command”? How easy is it for you to obey this command in today’s world?
- Try to put verses 16&17 into your own words. What have we been “appointed” to do and what have we been “commanded” to do? What does Jesus say will happen if we accept our appointment and obey His commands?
Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

How would you sum up John 15:1-17 in your own words? What does that mean for you to apply in your life?
Notes
Who doesn't want their life to count… Things get muddy when we start to apply our own definitions of how. Jesus was pretty clear in John 15 of how to make life count. As we connect to Jesus, the fruit of our life flows from that connection. Life and purpose is found within our connection and obedience to Christ. We all have purpose and we all have a mission to fulfill with our lives, that all comes to fruition when we first remain in Him and follow where He leads. Leadership tip Make sure as we launch a new season to take time and have dinner as a group. Discuss the details, logistics, and direction of the group. This is a great way to allow everyone to have a voice in where you are headed, what to expect this season, and for you as a leader to get everyone on the same page.
