Just Jesus

Message Notes

Look Back

What part did you play in bringing hope to a broken world this week?

Look Up

Read Matthew 4:1-4

  1. Why was Jesus taken to the wilderness? Who took him there and what does this say about God?
  2. Why did the tempter start by saying “if you are…”? What was he trying to do and how do most people respond when someone starts by saying this to them?
  3. How did Jesus respond to the tempter and what message was Jesus trying to send to the tempter?

Read Matthew 4:5-7

  1. How is the 2nd temptation of Jesus different from the 1st, and what does this teach us about methods that might be used by the devil to tempt people today?
  2. What does Jesus’ response to this temptation say about his loyalty and commitment? How might you apply this in your life?

Read Matthew 4:8-11

  1. How is the 3rd temptation of Jesus different from the other two? What did Jesus know that made it easy for Him to reject the Devil's offer?
  2. How easy is it for you to worship the Lord and serve Him only? What things help you and what things make this difficult?

Overall (Discovery Bible Study)

  • What do these scriptures say about God?
  • What do they say about people?
  • How will I apply this to my life?

Look Ahead

Which kingdom are you trusting & serving most - yours, the world or God’s? What area of your life do you need to evaluate and adjust to reflect God’s Kingdom principles?

Notes

Too often we want a god who agrees with us rather than a God who transforms us. The message of “worldly kingdoms” is to take more for ourselves, while Jesus tells us to give ourselves away. The world challenges us to prove that we matter - Jesus says we already matter. Worldly kings fight for influence while Jesus teaches the value of serving. The world encourages us to trust & serve ourselves - Jesus denied himself and calls us to follow His example.
